"This morning I wrote about who spends how much on Valentine’s Day, and what they buy. (The short version: men spend more than twice as much as women, and single people spend more than married people.) So that’s the what and how much, but what about the where?
Four maps share some perspective on that question. The first is from Brookings, the venerable Washington think tank, and it maps survey data on whether people report they’ve experienced feeling loved the previous day. (More great data on that subject here.)
The next three are from a location analytics company called Esri, and they chart the geography (U.S. only) of how much is spent annually on flowers, jewelry, and diamonds. Sure, not every purchase in those categories was romantic, but roll with it."

1. Don't Make it an All-in-one Web Map It's important to have a tight and focused intent of the web map.  Carefully consider which GIS data layers are truly needed for the map.  There is a tendency to overload as many geographic layers as possible into a single web map.  Only interesting and relevant geographic information should be provided. 2. K.I.S.S. Simplicity is key, hence the Keep it Simple, Stupid acronym.  Effective web maps are uncluttered and easy to use.  Avoid the urge to pile on too many tools, menus, and buttons.  Think about what the use of the web map is for, and only offer functionality that is applicable.  Don't offer the user an overwhelming amount of choices in either data layers or tools. Lots of tools, lots of layers, and no legend makes this web map hard to use. 3. Maps mean different things to different people.  So what is a map? My definition is simple: a map is an answer to a question.
