 Google has announced Mapathon 2013 on its Map Maker tool 

A nationwide mapping contest open to any resident of India, Mapathon 2013 will commence from February 12 and run till March 25.

"We're inviting Google Maps users from all over the country to help us create better maps for India by adding knowledge of their neighborhoods through Google Map Maker. And there's something in it for everyone. The top 1,000 mappers in India stand a chance to win Android tablets, smart phones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise," says Mysore.

The registrations for the competition have opened, and one can join the competition at http://g.co/mapindia2013.

Don't Make it an All-in-one Web Map It's important to have a tight and focused intent of the web map.  Carefully consider which GIS data layers are truly needed for the map.  There is a tendency to overload as many geographic layers as possible into a single web map.  Only interesting and relevant geographic information should be provided. 2. K.I.S.S. Simplicity is key, hence the Keep it Simple, Stupid acronym.  Effective web maps are uncluttered and easy to use.  Avoid the urge to pile on too many tools, menus, and buttons.  Think about what the use of the web map is for, and only offer functionality that is applicable.  Don't offer the user an overwhelming amount of choices in either data layers or tools.
