Getting to know Google Earth

The following diagram describes some of the features available in the main window of Google Earth:
Overview of Google Earth
  1. Search panel - Use this to find places and directions and manage search results. Google Earth EC may display additional tabs here.
  2. 3D Viewer - View the globe and its terrain in this window.
  3. Toolbar buttons - See below.
  4. Navigation controls - Use these to zoom, look and move around. See 'Using the Navigation Controls'.
  5. Sign in with your Google account -  When you sign in, you can share to Google+ or email what you're viewing in Google Earth.
  6. Layers panel - Use this to display points of interest.
  7. Places panel - Use this to locate, save, organize and revisit placemarks.
  8. Search in Places - Find your places quickly by searching for them.
  9. Earth Gallery - Click this to import exciting content from the Earth Gallery
  10. Status bar - View coordinate, elevation, imagery date and streaming status here.
  11. Overview map - Use this for an additional perspective of the Earth.

Placemark button Add a placemark for a location Sky button View the sky, moon and planets
Polygon button Add a polygon Measure button Measure a distance or area size
Path button Add a path (line or lines) Email button Email a view or image.
Image Overlay button Add an image overlay on the Earth Print button Print the current view of the Earth
Record a tour Googlr Maps button Show the current view in Google Maps
Historical imagery button Display historical imagery

Maps mean different things to different people.  So what is a map? My definition is simple: a map is an answer to a question. There are three basic kinds of maps that answer three basic types of questions: The Location map answers the question, “Where am I?” The Navigation map answers the question, “How do I get there?” The Spatial Relationships map answers the question “How are these things related?” It’s this third type of map—a map that helps in our understanding of spatial patterns and relationships—where we as GIS professionals spend most of our time.  We work hard making our maps.  Our maps can be beautiful works of art, but that’s not why we make them.  We make them to answer a question, to solve a problem, and to advance our understanding.  And therein lies the power of the map. 1. Don't Make it an All-in-one Web Map It's important to have a tight and focused intent of the web map.  Carefully consider which GIS data layers are truly needed for the map.  There is a tendency to overload as many geographic layers as possible into a single web map.  Only interesting and relevant geographic information should be provided. 2. K.I.S.S. Simplicity is key, hence the Keep it Simple, Stupid acronym.  Effective web maps are uncluttered and easy to use.  Avoid the urge to pile on too many tools, menus, and buttons.  Think about what the use of the web map is for, and only offer functionality that is applicable.  Don't offer the user an overwhelming amount of choices in either data layers or tools. Lots of tools, lots of layers, and no legend makes this web map hard to use. 3.
